Perspectives on digital interculturality - SoSe 2024

BA Cuso Media Thursdays - from 2 to 4 pm A myriad of intercultural interactions of various kinds have now become an everyday experience, mediated digitally via screens. This reflects a need for the extension of the understanding of intercultural communication. The term ‘digital interculturality’ has been suggested for describing digital practices embedded in a kind of hyper interculturality with its potential for a vast variety of new and diverse connections (and disconnections). In this seminar, we will examine ‘digital interculturality’ from a variety of perspectives - from the fine-grained viewpoint of interactional practices in online interactions to broader discussions around ethical and sociopolitical issues arising from the growing use of digital technologies to mediate intercultural communication. Concretely, students will be required to read texts that deal with these different aspects of digital interculturality and will be asked to give presentations and/or write essays that shed light on specific intercultural practices identified in digital spaces. Please note that this is not a hybrid seminar. Students are expected to attend all sessions and participate actively in discussions and group work. Image: Akemi Paz
