Seminar (Präsenzveranstaltung): MASS: Wahlpflichtmodul: Migration, Ethnizität, Ethnozentrismus // MASS: Wahlpflichtmodul: Kulturelle Praktiken, Wissensordnungen, ästhetische Formationen
Veranstaltungsbeginn: 09.04.2024
Di, 11:15 - 12:45 Uhr
Ort: GD 202
This seminar focuses on cultural, artistic and activist practices, forms, and mediums that emerge through various migration experiences and examines them within the broader emergent frameworks of living with and acting on troubled times, which characterize our contemporary cultural, social, and political horizons. How do people build lives after displacement? How do cultural practices of migrants open up possibilities for resilience, care, and hope, and inspire a politics of affinity? What can we learn from creative cultures that emerge through displacement experiences, if we do not subsume them within supposed ethnic, migrant, or diasporic communities or confine them to a distinct sphere of ‘migrant’ culture? In this seminar, we will explore unbounded, complex, fluid, and plural cultural spheres that are created through diverse forms of migration. We will critically address a range of concepts and debates that are significant to the study of migration, diaspora and exile including belonging, transnationalism, translocality, cosmopolitanism, multiculturalism, diversity, and postmigrant society as well as the key concepts of culture, place, identity, and mobility. We will discuss artistic, intellectual and more everyday forms of expression and creativity across diverse mediums such as art, film, music, performance, digital media, photography and everyday aesthetics. To do so, we will draw on participatory, artistic, activist and experimental methodological approaches to migration.

Creative Teambuilding in Contemporary Multicultural World - SoSe 2024
The links between theatre and business have been confirmed throughout recent decades, among others, by the birth of many team training programs. Their creators and trainers have adapted many theatre techniques for the team training in enterprises and business companies. Prof. Juliusz Tyszka combines in his course some techniques of team training taken directly from 1) theatre academies of different countries; 2) theatre companies of the 1960s and 1970s, working with the technique of collective creation (The Living Theatre, Open Theatre and others); 3) exercises and creative activities that he invented himself and applied in Polish student theatres and his academic practical courses; with 4) techniques applied with success in the world of international business (“Management Plan Spiel” and “OUTdoor Team Training”) that he was taught in the end of 1990s in Vienna at the course launched by world renowned business team training company Harramach & Partner. The training goes beyond operationally oriented application of different training techniques, aimed at short range, immediate “improving of team performance”. The basic goal here is long range improvement of team and personal abilities, with all respect to cultural differences and personal integrity of participants.

Culture - Ethnicity - Construct - SoSe 2024
The course addresses the complex relation among culture, ethnicity and construct, which is of a theoretical nature. On the one hand, the concepts of culture and ethnicity presuppose traditional anthropological perspective. On the other hand, however, the notion of construct suggests one is no longer preoccupied with the essentialist attitude towards the problem in question. Culture and ethnicity are important elements to describe the multifaceted nature of the contemporary world. Yet they need to be approached from a reflective point of view. This is why some analytic tools need to be presented. One, a student is to learn how to combine the flow of contingent data with an appropriate perspective which is engaged with the position of modernity. Two, (s)he is to take the flow in question in terms of constructivism. The student then is to be offered the way of how to cope with combining the complex nature of culture-ethnicity compound with the constructivist position to take.

Digital Discourse Analysis - SoSe 2024
This course is designed to introduce students to contemporary discourse research and equip them with tools for its analysis. We will learn how to do rigorous, ethical research and work with data from across digital platforms (e.g., YouTube, Instagram, Facebook). By looking into specific projects of established digital scholars, the students will arrive at a better understanding of what and how can be done with discourse in linguistic and cultural studies. Closer to the end of the semester, right before presenting individual projects, we will be working with qualitative software for data coding and analysis (MAXQDA). At the end of this course, the students should be able to analyze (digital) discourse and apply linguistic methods and tools in their term papers.
