This course is designed for the beginning student with minimal or no previous knowledge of German and focuses on the development of communicative competence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course is taught in German. The coursebook and workbook MOTIVE A1(Kursbuch UND Arbeitsbuch A1, Kompaktkurs DaF, Hueber-Verlag) in conjunction with current culture-rich supplemental materials offer a balanced approach to developing your individual language competencies.By the end of the semester, you will be able to engage in simple conversations about familiar things. You will know greetings and everyday expressions, you will be able to count and tell time, and negate sentences in day-to-day contexts. Furthermore, you will be able to talk about yourself and your family and friends. You will be able to speak about events that happened in the immediate past and express plans for the future. In addition, you will have developed reading strategies that allow you to glean information from simple newspaper and magazine articles and short literary texts.Because cultural knowledge is one of the foci of this course, you will learn much about practical life in Germany (in particular Frankfurt (Oder), Brandenburg, and Berlin) and German-speaking cultures.
